Vote Here -Amendment of current bylaws
Normally around this time, we would have held a GPO election for a new GPO President and Communication officer(s) under the current GPO Bylaws. After considerable discussion with Vivi and past GPO officers, we would like to propose a change this year and (hereafter) have elections take place in March for all officers, serving one year terms from July through June. The new terms and election schedule would help lessen the stress, disruptions, and time demand of GMIS staff and the GPO for their plans especially during the busy holiday period from December to February (Gala, Winter Celebration, Chinese Lunar New Year).
Per the current GPO Bylaws, the President and Communication positions are to be elected in December/January (which is now), serving one year terms from January through December. The Treasurer and Secretary are to be elected in June, serving one year terms from July through June. The rationale behind this staggered election schedule was to ensure that there are always at least two officers on the GPO with experience working closely with Vivi and the parents, and that historical knowledge is consistently passed on to new officers. Under the proposed GPO Bylaws change, all officer positions would instead be elected in March every year, serving one year terms from July through June. In order to incorporate the change this year, the terms of the current President and Communication positions would lengthen another six months until June 2017. The months from April through June would serve as a transition and training period, where the new GPO officers would work closely together with the existing officers on the current plans to better understand the workings of the GPO and GMIS (Vivi) by planning and attending GPO meetings with Vivi and passing on historical knowledge and materials. Here is the proposed change in the GPO Bylaws: Article V, section 5: "The terms of office for each officer shall run from July 1 through June 30 of each academic year. Elections for each officer shall take place in March, allowing for any new officers to shadow current officers through the end of the current officers’ terms. In the event a candidate cannot be found for a particular officer position, the previous officer may temporarily fill the position until a candidate is found."
