Smart Tips for Parent Volunteers
Here are 9 suggestions to make school volunteering FUN and truly helpful for everyone — the teachers, the kids, and you!
1. Volunteer for something you already find fun!
If you can’t stand messes, stay away from art day; maybe instead you enjoy caring for the class pet, taking photos, or helping with a cooking project? Whatever it is, it's always best to pick something that you will enjoy as well!
2. Share your talents.
If you’ve got a special skill or hobby that the kids will find interesting, or the school could benefit from, please tell us! Giving your fine talents will not only make you smile, but all of us too!
3. If you can’t make it, call, text, or email.
No one like to be stood up, right? Alert the Room Parent (or the event coordinator) directly if you can’t make it, and try to find a substitute yourself, if possible.
4. Don’t be late.
Tardiness may be a fact of life sometimes, but try your best to be on time. The kids and teachers are counting on you! Leave earlier if you can and be sure to leave plenty of time for parking.
5. Turn your cell phone off.
Volunteer time isn’t social time. It's not helpful when a parent is distracted by a call instead of helping with the kids.
6. Help ALL kids.
It's exciting to be at school with your own child, but please always remember to be inclusive and support all kids in the classroom. Not all children will have a parent attending events so it's important to share your attention and your presence with every child.
7. Maintain privacy.
One of the great perks about being in the classroom is to be able to see your child interact with others. However, please honor the privacy of other children by not speaking about them outside the classroom to other parents.
8. Be a role model & team player.
Whether in the classroom, during an event, or on a field trip, a bright smile and a positive attitude goes a long way! Lead by example and be the shinny happy parents who love GMIS!
9. Have fun!
Enjoy this special time helping with your children. Kids grow up FAST so really take this moment in their lives to make a difference!
